Story

Ghost Nebula was born where moonlight thins into something stranger, in a place sailors mistook for a moving cloud and old myths feared to name. From afar she looked like a drifting veil of midnight dust, but inside that darkness lived a dragoness made of sharpened quiet, cyan firelight, and wings that seemed to hold another universe beneath their skin.

Those who feared her filled the world with cruel stories. They said she stole the lost and dragged them through portals hidden in her wings. The truth was colder and lonelier. Ghost Nebula had spent centuries crossing the edges between worlds, hunting the things that slipped through rifts and fed on fear. She learned to be unseen because being seen always invited panic before understanding.

One winter night, a fracture opened over the sea cliffs not far from Kael's coastal cave. A creature of hollow light and broken teeth crawled from it, scattering birds and dimming the stars. Kael met it first with dark red flame. Ghost Nebula struck from above a heartbeat later, her wings blotting out the moon as she drove the creature back toward the tear it came from.

Neither trusted the other at first. Kael saw a phantom wrapped in darkness; Ghost Nebula saw another survivor who wore shadow like armor. But when the rift widened and threatened the cave itself, they fought together without hesitation. Kael pinned the creature in place with fire and shadow clones while Ghost Nebula folded the breach shut, her nebula-lit wings becoming a living seal across the wound in the sky.

Afterward, she should have vanished back into the dark as she always had. Instead, Athena invited her to the tide pools to rest. Stellar watched the traces of galaxy-light trapped inside her wings with open fascination, and Velvet offered soft words instead of suspicion. For the first time in longer than Ghost Nebula cared to count, a den did not feel like a trap. It felt like a threshold she was allowed to cross.

Kael understood her silences. He did not demand easy softness from a dragoness forged by the edges of other worlds. He stood beside her on the cliffs, spoke only when something true needed saying, and never once looked away from the parts of her others had called monstrous. In him, Ghost Nebula found not fear, but recognition.

Love came slowly, then all at once. It grew in midnight watches, in shared patrols over sleeping waves, in the calm that settled whenever Kael brushed against her shoulder beneath a starless sky. She chose him not because he tried to tame the dark within her, but because he welcomed it and trusted her to wield it with him.

So Ghost Nebula stayed. She became one of Kael's mates and wives, another heart in the family he built from survivors instead of sorrow. When night presses close around the coastal cave, her wings cast their impossible galaxy-glow over stone and sea alike. Nothing crosses the dark toward those she loves without meeting her first.

“Let the world call me omen, phantom, or void. Kael knows what I am beneath the dark. I am the wing that closes around our home, the silence that breaks only for those I love, and his wife for as long as the stars keep burning beyond my veil.”
